Fengdu Ghost City – Legend has it that the Ming Mountain, on which Fengdu is located, was one
of the graveyards for Taoism. In Tao, it is believed that when people die, their spirits will
gather at these graveyards (the “spirit world”, or “ghost city”). There are more than 70 temples
at Fengdu, first built in the Western Jin period (265-420 AD) and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing
Dynasties (1386-1911 AD). The site is divided into several levels, or courts, in which punishment
is meted out to those guilty of Earthly sins. Within the temples live a series of immortal spirits,
whose task is to judge people and torment their souls until they repent.
