If you don't know it, you might want to look up Robinson Jeffers' poem about the Pacific "The Eye." It's hard to find because of politically incorrect statements about the Japanese--it was writtend during World War II--but is one of the great evocations of the California seawatching experience nonetheless. Another is "Once By the Paciic" by Robert Frost, who lived In San Francisco for the earlier half of his childhood.
