Reverence continues even after one leaves the shrine and passes through the torii or the sacred arch located near the street entrance. I was watching all these "old-timers" walking out of Yasukuni then all of a sudden turning around and bowing. Who were they bowing to, I wondered to myself. Then I finally figured it out. Reverence @ the torii. It's sad that the younger population either forgot about this show of respect or never learned it. I fall into this category as well.
