Nuchi du Takara Memorial (Commemoration of the Battle of Okinawa) Part Four: Gunjinbushi

The 66th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa commemorated & sponsored by the National Japanese American Historical Society at Japantown Peace Plaza in San Francisco on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Part Four: Gunjinbushi performed by Kinuko Mototake, et. al. Gunjin Bushi is the story of a recently married couple who is notified that the husband has been drafted into the army and must report for duty the next day to be shipped to the front. They accept their fate for the sake of the nation. The wife prays to Heaven that her husband returns safely. The husband is concerned for his mother, worrying who will take care of her. The wife eases his concern, saying she will take care of her no matter what the hardships. Then thinking about tomorrow, no words are spoken, only tears are shared.
