It's actually called an Orb Weaver. If you notice the web strands have tufts of white (orbs)every few inches. They make those so that birds don't fly into them and break the web. I have a few of these in my front and back yard here in Central Florida. If I happen to walk into one and break a strand, the spider will repair it in a few minutes. Some of the connecting strands stretch out for over eight to ten feet. I am always surprised at how fast they repair any damage. They are a welcome addition to the yard because their bite isn't poisonous and the eat a lot of bugs.

There is a story (fact or fiction?) that a very wealthy plantation owner had hundreds of these to spin arching webs across an oak allee, then sprayed the webs gold, for his daughter's wedding.

I looked him up, Paul. It's called a jeweled spider. You can find more info and lots of photos at this sitehttp://www.rochedalss.eq.edu.au/jewl.htm
