On August 21, 2002 we drove the 60 miles (mostly gravel road) from Superior, Montana to the site of the Kelly Creek Ranger Station (KCRS), Idaho. Roughly the first 30 miles were in Montana. I had worked at KCRS during the summers of 1960, 1961 and 1962 while an undergraduate student, initially majoring in forestry. It had been almost exactly 40 years to the day since I had been in this area. The country is still beautiful. The most unexpected discovery of the day was that the KCRS no longer exists, as it was abandoned and burned in 1986. Pictures in this gallery show scenes along the road to and from KCRS, what the KCRS site looks like today and how it looked in 1960.
