Jabiru festivals

After visiting the Katherine area we decided to drive back to Jabiru in Kakadu rather than heading
towards Darwin. This enabled us to check out the Mahbilil festival (Aboriginal culture) at Lake Jabiru
and a local football carnival. The locals seem to be fans of Aussie rules with many of them gathered
to watch the footy while Mahbilil Festival preparations were underway.

Our time at the Festival was limited and having to leave by mid afternoon meant we missed out
on Aboriginal live music, bush tucker tasting, dancing and the evening activities.

But we got to watch some traditional food preparation. The Kakadu Culture Camp were cooking
buffalo and Magpie Goose in a ground oven with hot rocks, paperbark and eucalyptus leaves.

Injalak arts from Oenpelli Gunbalayna in Arnhem land had Aboriginal ladies hand weaving baskets
and mats from natural plant fibre such as pandanus or palms. Various types of Aboriginal fibre
art was for sale. I certainly gain a greater appreciation for products by watching it being
hand woven and knotted.

I quietly moved around the Festival snapping random images which I hope you enjoy. If anyone
feels any photos should be removed or has queries about any images, please email me.
