Wilsons Promontory National Park commonly known as Wilsons Prom or The Prom, is a national park in the Gippsland region of Victoria (Australia), 157 km southeast of Melbourne. It is mainland Australia's southernmost national park, known for its beautiful rainforests, unspoiled beaches, and abundant wildlife. It covers the southern portion of Wilsons Promontory, a peninsula containing South Point, the southernmost point on the Australian mainland. A lighthouse on the southeast corner of the peninsula is the southern-most lighthouse on mainland Australia and has operated continuously since 1859. Early on the morning of Sunday 8 February a dry lightning storm passed over Wilsons Promontory, lightning the Cathedral bushfire. This bushfire burnt 25,200 ha over five weeks, close to 50 per cent of the national park. What amazes me enormously was the recovering of the grass trees. A wood of flowering grasstrees can be seen. Normally, before the bushfires, the grass trees were sitting on top of ancient sand dunes and would have been totally hidden until the fire scorched its way through the swamp. Grass trees belong to the family Xanthorrhoeceae whose nine genera include lomandras, the small tufted plant found throughout Australia.
