Slupsk – one of the most beautiful cities in the North of Poland – is situated 18 kilometers away from the Baltic Sea. Slupsk is city which through history has been influenced by different cultures: Kashubian, Wendish, German and Polish. Slupsk was founded in the 9 century as a castle settlement inhabited by the Kashubian folk. By medieval times it had developed into an urban centre under the authority of the princes of western Pomerania.
The name of Slupsk originates from the name of a river. It is connected etymologically with a Polish word "poll", and it might indicate a tower or an element of water or defense edifice built on a river bank. The other theory says that the name might be derived from the fact that due to boggy land, houses used to be built on polls. The Kashubian original of the name was Stolpsk.
The region is called Pommerenia or Pommern.
