high among the branches.
Yet one by one the oak leaves
fluttered down—
gently, reluctantly—
until they gathered
on the bridge’s railing,
a small congregation
leaning into each other
for comfort.

The night rain passed through,
leaving beads of water—
tiny trembling droplets,
like tears shed
for an unexpected fall.
