19 Garden birds

Melbourne, Australia

The Common Myna left and the Spotted Turtle dove right sunbathing on the roof of the garage.
I love the sound of the twittering Common Myna’s, they have a huge variety of twitters
and they are also able to imitate others bird vocals.

Another interesting story how they came to Australia.
The Common Myna is found naturally throughout Southeast Asia,
and was first introduced to Australia in Victoria between 1863 and 1872 into Melbourne’s market gardens to control insects.
The bird is likely to have spread to New South Wales (where it is currently most populous) at around the same time.
The bird was later introduced to Queensland as a predator of grasshoppers and cane beetles.
Now the Myna’s are considered a pest. ☺

What a lovely pair. I saw a Myna in the Florida Keys...had never seen one before. A great capture and good info behind it.

A nice catch and an interesting story how, thanks to human intervention and judgment a bird can turn from a helper to a pest.

Beautiful pest! Great light. Thank you for the interesting informative story. We have a similar situation here in North America, with the starlings, a european bird,

They are such cheeky birds, jumping onto tables to share your food if you're eating
al fresco! Lovely shot of the 2 birds enjoying the sunshine Mieke!

Terrific capture of these two! Myna birds are very intriguing and too bad this is considered a pest now.
