The mighty Mississippi River flows around Algiers Point in the shape of a crescent (Crescent City), and is at it deepest, approximately 200 feet. The current can also be difficult, especially in high water. Large ships must have a local pilot on-board to help them navigate this stretch of the river.

The neighborhood near this point became known as Algiers Point in the 1970s.
