In the early hours of July 28, 2002, while fighting the Stanza Fire, Engine 11 from Lassen National Forest plunged off the road and tumbled 1225 feet to the bottom of a ravine. Of the 5 person crew, two firefighters miraculously survived—Steve Oustad, Heather DePaolo and John Self were killed in the line of duty.
