Thanks to the commitment to tradition and history of the house owners and apothecaries, it has remained a gem: the Engel Pharmacy on Schulberg, Bad Homburg’s first pharmacy, opened in 1684. In the early years of the Homburg spa, it played a role that extended beyond just issuing medicine: Matthias, who was the apothecary at that time, built bathing facilities next door to offer mineral, steam and sweat baths. As Homburg continued its rise to fame as a spa of world renown, however, it was unable to keep pace with demands. In 1901 the Engel pharmacy, whose entrance is adorned by a golden putto, an imitation of the famous angel in Raffael’s Sixtine Madonna, was fully restored and the magnificent historical timber beamwork uncovered.
