Old Frankfurt

Germany

On one of my days off, I headed to Frankfurt. On warm days people converge on the banks of the river Main to enjoy a cool beer in the delightful outdoor setting of a beer garden or a glass of apple wine in one of the city’s many taverns. Frankfurt is a city of contrasts, a city of variety. Frankfurt has its own way of life, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Frankfurt’s most famous son, summed up so well by saying: “Here I am human, here I can be myself.” You can spend hours walking the streets of this diverse city with more than 180 nationalities.

This is the rebuilt center of Frankfurt (Roemer, the old market and judgement place, and the place where all german Kaisers (=in former times europe was reigned by kings, one of them was elected to be king of kings, to rule over the others in general, this was the Kaiser (from lat. Caesar). A place in Frankfurt with originally old buildings (from the 12th century) is in Hoechst, an area of Frankfurt. This is due to the fact that it is nearby the HOECHST chemical factory which has not been bombed in World War 2 (the allied forces wanted the intact factory because they wanted to proceed with the german researches and inventions). The rest of Frankfurt was bombed and up to 95% destroyed. Old men told me that children played in the ruins into the late 60´s (!). I like Frankfurt too, I live here for 16 years now. It has many possibilities (job, culture, biggest and most central airport in europe), BUT too less protagonists to bring all this to life. though it is the city with the highest criminal rate in germany it is a good place to live. highest criminal rate is relative to US-figures: in Frankfurt per YEAR we have as much criminal acts as in LA recorded on an avarage DAY from 07am-01pm. Frankfurt is open minded but not aggressive. You are not forced to be part of the city life. Divided in ca. 20 areas (former little villages assumed by the city of Frankfurt within the last 500 years) . you can still live in the country (with cows, dogs, horses, farmers etc.) and youre still in Frankfurt. If you prefer to have city vibes surrpounding you its a 10 minutes (!) trip with the underground and you have it. We have other distances than US because the entire space of germany is as big as Texas. BUT 85 million people live here which is one third of the population of USA. But the population in USA is spread over 50 states.
the statue in front of the picture is the "blindfolded Justitia". She shall judge without preferences or prejudice. The three houses in the back have names (like many old buildings in germany). When Frankfurt was a young but important city (all Kaisers were crowned in Frankfurt) this was not only the center of Frankfurt culturally but also geographically. A typical german city at that age had not more than 3000 citizens. The famous christmas market (old tradition since 13th century)takes also place here.
