I WAS IN THE U.S. ARMY IN 1957/1958 STATIONED IN IDA-OBERSTEIN WITH THE 58TH EVACUATION HOSPITAL AND LIVED AT THE STRASSBUG KASERNE.

Great pics Mike. Not the Idar-Oberstein I remember. I was stationed at Strassburg Kaserne from 1960-62 with the 85th Quartermaster Corp. and worked at Nabollenbach General Depot. It was 2 of the best years of my life. Took lots of furloughs through all of western Europe. Had an inexpensive 35mm SLR. Took mostly slides. Took the wife back in 1971 for a 3 month backpacking trip(Europe on $5.00 a day); equally awesome. Went to Idar for 2 days to see a German friend I worked with at Nabollenbach. Your Idar message center enlightened me to a few factoids that I was not aware of when I was stationed there. My mind was on other things. Danke Mike.

i enjoyed the pictures you took of idar-oberstein-it brought back memories of when i was there during 1965-1968-my dad was in army stationed at baumholder, went to school there -whenever dad got off work on weekends we would drive up to idar-oberstein and eat steak and german potato salad at this restaurant that was built in the side of a mountain-i dont remember the name of it-when they served soft drinks i remember they did not put ice in glasses-they just served it cold-wonderful memories-the church was what i remember the most-also the stream that flowed by the road going into the town-german pastry-the people were hospitable-made good friends and good memories as a young man-i had a good friend named mike davis who lived in baumholder-we were best friends-he went to school with me-came back to the states before i did-wrote letters to each other-would love to know his whereabouts-also had a lady named Frau Batz who came in and helped us when mom became ill-after all these many years i recently found some slides from germany along with other mementos-thank you for photo gallery

I was an army brat when my father was stationed in munchweiler in 1957-8. All I remember is that he was the Commanding Officer of the "15th Evac" a hospital unit I believe.
His name was Capt. Edward Holdren.
I really enjoyed living in Munchweiler, much more than Hanau or Pirmasens.
I hiked the mountains on weekends and can understand why Germans are so proud of Germany. Now that I am old and grey, I cherish those memories playing pony league
baseball, and working in the bowling alley, and always, always hiking in the mountains.
