I don't know for sure, but I suspect the position of the lower mailbox was one of Hondo's ideas.
Hondo Crouch, along with 2 friends, bought the town of Luckenbach in 1970. It is said that they had an "overactive" imagination. Hondo was the "Clown Prince" of Luckenbach.
He gave everyone titles and started activities like the Luckenbach World's Fair, Ladies State Chili Bust, Hug-ins, etc
It sounds like they had a lot of fun. It would have been interesting to visit there in the 70s.
