Entrance to Scone Palace

Perth, Scotland

Our tour guide handing out tickets to the palace tour.
There is a very interesting painting and story to go with it inside this palace.
Dido Elizabeth Belle was a girl born into slavery of mixed race, whose mother was a black African woman, Maria Belle and whose father was Rear Admiral Sir John Lindsay, nephew of the 1st Earl of Mansfield.
When Dido's mother died, making her an orphan at the age of six, her father came to claim her before returning to his family home at Kenwood House in Hampstead. There he beseeched his uncle, the Earl of Mansfield, to take the child into his care and to raise her alongside her cousin, Elizabeth, in a manner befitting her aristocratic blood line.
I don't generally take pictures inside these places as I want to enjoy the interiors on their own.
So I don't have a picture of the portrait, but I found this story fascinating and unique for the time.
Mansfield took significant steps to abolish slavery.
If you ever get to Scotland, this is definitely one of the more interesting palaces to tour.

Mansfield sounds a warm hearted and enlightened person...the crenellations do add character to the structures straightforward design..
