This is the hermitage outside Assisi in the adjacent forest where St. Francis and his followers came to pray and meditate within small caves around 1200AD. There was only a small oratory here at that time. St. Bernardine built a friary and church in 1400 and the complex was expanded over the years to what you see today. Monks still live here.
