A large hummingbird characterised by a straight bill and contrasting plumage with a dark central stripe on the underparts bordered by bright green, while the upperparts show metallic green and bronze tones typical of the genus. The species feeds mainly on nectar supplemented with small insects and is distributed widely through parts of Central America and the Caribbean, with the Cozumel population representing the regional form found on the island.
