IMG_1416 Two Davids and St. George in the Bargello.jpg

In the large Renaissance room on the main floor of the Bargello,
can be found some of the most important Renaissance sculpture in Italy,
and in fact, in the world.

In the foreground of this image, we have Donatello's small life-size David, famed to be the first bronze nude
since antiquity. David is shown here in a contrapposto pose with one leg resting on the severed head of Goliath.
This David was made ca 1440, and is famed due to its being the first bronze nude cast since antiquity.
Cosimo di Medici commissioned the David which originally was in the courtyard of the Medici palace in Florence.

To the right and rear of Donatello's David can be seen Verrochio's David , also made of bronze
and also a Medici commission in 1473-74,
By contrast to Donatello's David, Verrochio's David is clothed in a short kilt,

In the background on the wall, is Donatello's marble St. George, commissioned by the Armorer's Guild in 1417.
St. George originally stood in a niche on the north side of Orsanmichele, and he had a bronze helmet and sword,(now missing).

Various guilds in Florence were commissioned to create statues of their patron saints to decorate
the niches on the exterior sides of the building. Donatello's original St. George now resides in the Bargello for preservation.
and a copy is now in place in its original niche on the north side of Orsanmichele.
