IMG_1294 Restored "Gates of Paradise" in Museo del Duomo.jpg

Here an admirer captures a great image of Lorenzo Ghiberti's restored "Gates of Paradise" using his iPad.
The Gates (East Doors of the Baptistery in Florence) were made by Ghiberti between 1425-52, and are gilded bronze.
They have been under restoration one panel at a time, since the 1980's and recently re-assembled
and put on display in the Museo del Duomo.

These magniificent doors were the second set of doors made by Ghiberti for the Baptistery.
The first set of doors with smaller quatrafoil panels, represented scenes from the Life of Chirst.
They were originally installed on the East side of the Baptistery opposite the facade of Sta. Maria del Fiore, the Cathedral of Florence.
The doors were paid for by the Calimala, or wool guild of Florence.
The Calimala was so pleased with Ghiberti's work, that they commissioned Ghiberti to make a second set of doors, seen in this image.
These doors have square panels with scenes from the Old Testament.
Upon their completion, they were considered so beautiful, that the guild had the original doors moved to
the North side of the Baptistery, and these magnificent gilded bronze doors installed in their place on the main, or East side of the Baptistery.
When Michelangelo first saw them, he said that they were beautiful enough to be the Gates of Paradise,
thus giving them this well known title.

During the great Florence flood of November 4, 1966, two of the lower panels were torn off the doors
by the flood waters swirling around the octagonal Baptistery, and found lying in the mud.
At that time, it was decided the doors needed a major restoration, and a permanent home indoors to preserve their beauty for posterity.
