This spiraling sculpture containing three figures is a tour-de-force of the sculptor's art.
When one considers the difficulty of sculpting a single figure, such as Michealngelo's David, the difficulty of
arranging and carving three inter-acting figures in one piece is rather amazing.
Giambologna carved this piece ca. 1570's and it has stood in the right arch of the Loggia di Lanzi in Florence
since 1583. The theme of the abduction of the Sabine women is story from ancient Roman history, shown here
symbolically with youth capturing the beautiful woman from her older husband.
The spiraling shape of the interacting group has an upward motion that is enhanced by the twisting bodies and
upward reaching arm of the top figure.
