Two girls admire and discuss Ghirlandaio's double portrait of an anonymous old man and his grandson, a classic example of the relationship of youth and old age.
Today's medical knowledge suggests the condition on the old man's nose to be hypertrophic rosacea. The child is oblivious of this in his obvious love for his grandfather.
Ghirlandaio is probably most famous for his frescoes, a number of which are in Florentine churches.
Also of interest is the fact that the youthful Michelangelo was apprenticed to Ghirlandaio in his studio in Florence.
