Caledonia, my home town has been the site of intense media coverage after a group of Native protesters from the Six Nations Reserve moved on to a construction site in the town on Feb. 28, claiming the land was theirs as part of an 18th-century treaty.
On April 20, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers raided the site and arrested 16 people -- but within hours, hundreds of additional aboriginal protestors showed up at the site.
That set off a chain of events that led to a blocking of Argyle the main street through town, Highway # 6 which goes around the town, the burning of a wooden bridge resulting in blocking a railway line that also runs through town.
The days and weeks that followed the initial police raid were filled with tension as hundreds of non-native Caledonia residents clashed with police and protestors demanding an end to the occupation.
Cameron; great job covering the news. We need this kind of work by photographers. I live in the US, in Oregon (NW) and never heard of this event. Keep covering it. Thanks, LL
