About the setup:
Most pictures here from 2005 were shot with very basic equipment: Vivitar McMacro lens (the really cheap one that weighs about as much as a box of Crackerjack).

As I got more and more into macro, I upgraded to a Sigma 105 and Sigma 180 for my macro shooting. Click here for a link to the 105 rig.

I usually use at least one extension tube (36mm) and sometimes a Tamron 1.4 converter, which keeps the distances a little less alarming to the subject. When fully macro'ed out, I can fill the frame with a pinky nail. Everything's hand-held, and I'm almost always at f16, which is as small an aperture I dare go to avoid diffraction.

Lighting has been a variety of approaches: All recent stuff uses a Lumiquest Softbox, but I've also done a bunch of ringlight work (the 2005 stuff).

About flies:
Some 120,000 different kinds of flies are now known and estimates are that there may be more than 1,000,000 species living today.
