Wildflowers in Seacoast New Hampshire

These are wildflowers I've found in Seacoast New Hampshire, both natives (e.g., Goldenrod) and established exotics (e.g., Purple Loosestrife). Eventually I plan to organize the flowers into sub-galleries by color.

By far the best book for identification is:

Marilyn J. Dwelley, "Summer & Fall Wildflowers of New England," 1977, Downeast Enterprise (unfortunately out of print and difficult to obtain). Not only is it focused on this area, instead of attempting national coverage, the use of colored drawings is more effective than trying to capture a plant in a single photograph.

Older books have a real usefulness and charm and I will occasionally quote from them. These include:

Mrs. William Starr Dana, "How to Know the Wildflowers," 1893, Charles Scribners. Illustrated with black and white line drawings by Marion Satterlee. Note: librarians insist on cataloging the book under the author's unmarried name of Theodora Parsons, even though that is not mentioned anywhere in the original book! The book has been reprinted several times, but is currently out of print. For example: Mrs. William Starr Dana, "How to Know the Wild Flowers," 1989, Houghton Mifflin. With 25 color paintings by Manabu Saito.

Alice Lounsberry, "A Guide to the Wild Flowers," 4th ed., 1899, Frederick A. Stokes. Color drawings by Mrs. Ellis Rowan.

Older pictures taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950. Newer pictures taken with a Minolta Dimage A1.
