On May 26, 2012, there was a formal ceremony to mark the opening of the SafePath sidewalk from the Wentworth Hotel and Marina area to the New Castle Common. This was the culmination of over six years of effort led by David Borden with help by many others. The key contribution was from Howard Crosby in granting an easement across the Crosby land.

The ceremony featured the bright and brash Leftist Marching Band from Portsmouth, with Bob Rais as master of ceremonies, a Pledge of Allegiance led by Peter Rice, and a reading of thanks and acknowledgements by David Borden. Leading the walk-through by those gathered was Bill Williams, the Town's oldest resident (holder of the Boston Post Cane) at 99+ years!
