Ms. Rogers, your "A Better Mid-South" segment that aired Tuesday, errored Tuesday.

Allow me to offer a few thoughts.

You said "There's only one use for an assault rifle, and that's to kill people, lots of people".

Actually, some hunters use black rifles to hunt game. Granted, more are used for target shooting or self defense. Most are simply, not used. An infinitesimal number are used in criminal homicides. According to the FBI, in 2014, 248 murders were committed with ALL types of rifles. 1567 were committed with knives.

And " I believe we need an immediate ban on all assault rifles".

Laws passed in 1934 and 1986 made assault rifles virtually impossible to purchase.

More importantly, among the weapons used in Orlando was a Sig Sauer MCX. This is a SEMI-AUTOMATIC rifle and is incapable of automatic fire. That's to say, one pull of the trigger yields one shot. This was clearly evident on one of the cell phone videos of the carnage. Single shots were heard in the background.

By definition, "Assault Rifles" are capable of "select fire" i.e. single action and/or fully automatic, multiple shots when the trigger is held to the rear. They were born in Germany during WWII with the production of the Sturmgewehr, literally, assault rifle. Some erroneously believe that the AR in AR15, etc. stands for automatic rifle or assault rifle. Actually, it stands for Armalite Rifle, a major arms manufacturer.

To emphasize, ASSAULT RIFLES are fully automatic. The weapon used in Orlando was not fully automatic. Thus, it was not an assault rifle.

The above shown weapon is a Ruger Mini 14. It has been in production forty-three years. As you can see, it resembles any run-of-the-mill rifle. This weapon can perform exactly as did Omar Mateen's. It fires the same rounds and can be equipped with a magazine of the same capacity.

Most importantly, remember. The second amendment is neither about target practice, nor hunting. Its authors never envisioned an attack by white tail deer. The intent of the amendment is wholly, to allow the militia, the armed citizen, to repel a tyrannical government.
