Emalie Appleton 1945-2006

I have taught English in Memphis since getting out of graduate school in 1970. I have taught at both Christian Brothers University and The University of Memphis, but am now exclusively at The U of M.

I have kept in close contact with lots of Central friends through the years such as Cristina Muller, Carol Johnson, Jim Cole, Martha McKellar, and Bob Jolley. I hope this website will encourage lots of people from out of town to come to the reunion this summer.

EMALIE APPLETON BROOKS, 61, of Memphis, died Monday, September 11, 2006 at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, following a long illness. Born on June 17, 1945, in Memphis to the late Thomas H. and Margaret Glennan Appleton, she attended The Hutchison School and Central High School, where she graduated with honors in 1963. At Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Following graduation in 1967, she began teaching in the public school system and earned a master's degree in English at The University of Memphis. For most of the last two decades, she has served as an adjunct instructor of English at The University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University. At St. John's Episcopal Church, she served on the vestry and was active in women's organizations. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, William H. Brooks; a daughter, Lauren Brooks Poindexter; and a brother, Dr. Thomas H. Appleton, Jr., of Lexington, KY. She leaves behind a legion of friends, notably Canon Thomas Hall of Memphis and Anne D. Morris of San Ramon, CA. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church with a funeral following at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Emalie Appleton Brooks Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o University of Memphis Foundation, P.O. Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38101-9840 or the Church Health Center. Memorial Park Funeral Home 901-767-8930 St. John's Episcopal Church 3245 Central Ave
