Oct. 5, 2013 – From Dorothy Dow: I'm so sorry that I won't be there with you all, but I'll be on a long planned trip to Israel. I read the names of everyone coming, and with the memories I realize how much my time at Central shaped me and has stayed with me through the years. When I went from a private school class of 30 girls to a class of 500 boys (!) and girls, I learned that the world is an exciting place filled with amazing people and incredible energy. Sylvia Saripkin sat next to me in homeroom, gave me my first matzo, and nothing has been the same since. I am deeply grateful for that matzo and everything else you all have given me.
A brief summary if you're posting notes from those of us who can't be there: We live in Rhinebeck, NY (just 2 hrs north of NYC if you're up this way). I retired from full time academic counseling at Bard College, but now work in the Bard Prison Initiative, a privately funded college degree program in 6 NYS correctional facilities. I do academic advising with our incarcerated students .in our program and have found it challenging and immensely rewarding. We have 2 children, both academically inclined. Our daughter teaches medical anthropology at the UW Bothell campus near Seattle. She and her partner are working with an agency to adopt a baby. (They intend to marry, but it appears that's not a requirement for adoption. Times have changed!) Our son finishes his graduate degree this year in economics. He and his wife, who's from South Korea, will both be on the job market and we are keeping our fingers crossed that they will find jobs in the same place and not too far from us. My husband, Dod, has cut back on his hours but continues to develop software. Bobby, a special thanks to you and your crew for keeping us all in touch and pulling this off!
Pep rallies. The Pig 'n' Whistle. The Counts. Dissecting earthworms in Mrs. Green's bio class. Occasional fights in the hall. Cheer leaders in straight skirts. Passing notes in Latin class. Lakeland. Mrs. Smith's fierce gaze. Hating trig. It goes on and on. I thank you all for everything and wish only the best for you all. Rock on!
