Tlos, Turkey The ancient city of Tlos is in southwestern Turkey (known as Lycia.) The settlement on the site began more than 4,000 years ago, but the language (Luwian) and traditions of the early inhabitants eventually disappeared after it was occupied by various rulers over the centuries. Today the site is dominated by the Acropolis, the Roman walls, the theatre, the stadium, the agora, the public baths, Byzantium church and well preserved Lycian rock-carved tombs. It is believed that the most famous tomb is the one of the mythical hero, Bellerophon. According to the mythology Bellerophon was sent by the Lycian king to kill the fire-breathing monster, called Chimera that kept the whole district in fear. The gods gave the winged horse named Pegasus to Bellerophon to help in fulfilling his mission. Taking off on his flying horse he slew the monster, Chimera and then married the daughter of the king. The local population was living in Tlos until the 19th century AD. link to my gallery of home of the monster, Chimera https://pbase.com/cemilgursen/home_of_the_fire_breathing_monster_chimera_turkey
