Hierapolis (meaning 'sacred city' because of the temples and its religious importance) was believed by the ancient Greeks to have been founded by Apollo . It became part of the Roman province of Asia in 133 BC and reached its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Hierapolis is mentioned in the Bible, when St. Paul praises Epaphras in his letter to the Colossians. Ancient tradition also associates Hierapolis with a biblical figure, reporting that Philip (either the apostle or the evangelist) was martyred there . The city was destroyed by successive earthquakes but rebuilt. It was finally abandoned after a devastating earthquake which razed the city. Hierapolis was settled in an area of 1000 x 800 m. Most of the ruins standing today in the site date from the Roman and Early Christian periods. Hierapolis is recognized as a World Heritage Site together with the travertines of Pamukkale.
