Like many typical developing countries, the sudden surge of modernisation and wealth has left a widening gap between the poor and the rich in Malaysia. This is clearly evident in areas like Kampung Baru where wooden shacks and poor living conditions still exist next to modern skyscrapers, like the Petronas Twin Towers built from oil money. The towers, which were once the tallest in the world, are much loved by the Malaysians because it is a testament of wealth and progress in their country. But the reality is that there are still many who live in poverty who have not tasted wealth nor modernisation, but only have the privilege to admire it from a distance.
