Muar "Mee Rebus" Man Montage

Mee Rebus is an egg noodle dish that comes with spicy, thick, aromatic gravy, and this man -in his opinion- makes the best "Mee Rebus" in Muar and the whole of Malaysia. His recipe is so tasty that he claims even the current Prime Minister has eaten there, which he proofs with newspaper clippings of his visit, framed on the walls. He is proud of his noodles and is eager to please - even treating us - Phil, Tim, my husband and I - to 2 plates of Mee Rebus, on the house!

I stood infront of the glass panel of his stall and made images of him while he took orders from customers. I noticed that the glass reflected the old shophouses from across the street, which are a key characteristic of this charming old town. So I experimented with the reflections and used them as context to make an interesting portrait of this warm and generous chef. What do you think of this experimental montage?

Thanks Phil & Chor Eng for commenting on this image. We have a glimpse of the complex world he lives and works in. But he is a simple man doing a simple job-Yet we know that he contributes much to the life and colour of the town.

You bring his world to his work here, Celia. It is fascinating to see how your images provides a context that neither mine nor Tim's includes. Each of us as a different story to tell. (http://www.pbase.com/image/86311429

In the middle bottom of the montage, you can see somebody has just finished his meal and is enjoying a cup of coffee. The montage sums it all: pre-war shophouses with Chinese, English and Malay words, a street congested with modern day cars, a friendly chef and his wife, cooked chicken to feed the hungry customer, and a relaxed customer taking his time to finish his coffee. This montage successfully shows how complex life can be in one instance.
