Cisterns were very important structures that were built to carry and store water for the Roman cities centuries ago. Now the cisterns have eroded and are bone dry, allowing me to stand in one of the caverns. As I look out into the horizon, I see a sea of green surrounding the cisterns. The lush carpet of vegetation appears to remember that this was once a place of water - a source of life to the great Roman civilizations here.
