As we explored the countryside and looked for ruins, we sometimes came across houses in the middle of nowhere. These homes were very basic, often made of stone and plastered crudely. As I walked and explored the outer walls of Ksar Kedim, I was surprised to hear music, and eventually traced it to a house near the ruins. I was even more surprised when I found a radio sitting on the edge of its window sill. This modern-looking piece of technology looked so out of place in this old, rustic house but its music and news from the world outside must have brought much consolation and joy for those living here in this lonely, desolate countryside.
