Beacons of the Salt Flats

The very rare rains at Chott El Jerid leave a very shallow layer of water above the salt, creating the illusion of a melting lake in spring. These salt flats which are virtually featureless can be very disorienting. And like a bright beacon in the dark, these palm trunk markers are the only visible references used to guide trading caravans centuries ago across this wide expanse of seemingly never-ending white.
