The other side of Spring

I found this growing just outside the area I mow, off my backyard. I'll cut it down this weekend (to avoid getting all the spines in the grass), but it's pretty in its own rather intense way, I think. It's about 24 inches tall!

it is indeed a thistle--many of which are quite beautiful when blooming but they have a very LONG tuber and are hard to remove and seed like crazy--remove it before it goes to seed--they have an average of 10,000 seeds per plant--dawn, certified Master Gardener, answered all the hort lines asking "how to get rid of these things"..... oh, and should that be a problem, dig them out--every piece of the root you leave in the soil will turn into another one.
