Ancient and Modern
by

An ancient avenue of beech trees line the road which passes Badbury Rings hillfort in Dorset.
These trees were planted by William Bankes, owner of the Kingston Lacy estate,
for his mother over 125 years ago. Of course he didn't plant them himself
- there were originally 365 on each side of the road.
French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars were drafted in to do the spade-work.
Old age and storms have caused some damage, so a new avenue was planted further from the road.
Some time in the future, the ancient giants will be felled in favour of the younger avenue.

Very nice shot, it looks like an old English painting.

(originally) 365 trees on each side of the road must have been an awesome sight.
This area must present some great photo opportunities David with all its history.

interesting bit of history--it's very sad tho that these old giants are destined for firewood. I'm always sad to see big old trees destroyed. At least they've had the foresight to plant the new ones to take over!
