Mexico-bound Monarch
by Steve Sprengel

Holmes Lake, Lincoln, Nebraska

Seeing my camera at the dog run, an old man with a "Hush Puppy" Basset Hound wanted to make sure I knew
about the unusual purple daisies over by the bend in the creek. The color had caught th eye of another as well.

Colors enhanced by the gold of the setting sun, unlike the six preceding generations that
mated and died after a few weeks, this Monarch's reproductive urge has been suppressed by
the cooling fall weather so its life can be extended for six months. It will fly 2,500 miles to
the Oyamel fir trees of Southern Mexico, where it will hibernate with a very low metabolism to
survive until spring and fly the same 2,500 miles north and the cycle will repeat all over again.
