Endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker

If this is in fact an Endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker I am very happy to have one in my back yard. This bird has been listed as endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service since 1970 . Supposedly, there are estimates of only 10,000 to 14,000 of them left in the US. Many efforts are underfoot to protect the habitats of these birds which seems to be the reason for their decline.

The red patch on the back of the head and the white back make this a Hairy Woodpecker, or possibly a Downy. The Hairy has a longer beak. A Red-cockaded would be a great catch though. Nice imahe.

You might want to crop it down a bit. The white thing on the top is the first thing my eye goes to. Its great that you have this little guy in your yard!!
