by Liz Bickel

Experimenting with the Kenko Pro 300 DG

As I think back to when the photo was taken, the softness may be have been the result of a touch of motion blur because the butterfly was never still. Or maybe it was DOF because of wings protruded farther forward than the head and flower. I admit that I don't normally do much macro work and may need to perfect the technique.

However, my main concern right now is that the Kenko isn't creating a problem. Extenders can cause softness. At this point, I'd prefer a problem with shooting technique than I would with the equipment. But I'm not sure of what was going on...

Nice arrangement. The softness looks like DOF to me because the thistle & stem further back are sharp.

It's a great composition and the lighting works very well. It is a tad soft on the butterfly, but you might be able to correct that somewhat with some local sharpening--something like 20-60-4 in USM or try highpass sharpening on just the butterfly perhaps?

It's a nice shot but as you said a bit soft.. But I can't do better ...

Liz, I think this photo is beautiful. Looks like the Kenko extension tubes work well for this kind of photo. For the low cost, I'd keep them for these kind of photos.
