And by the by, WHAT I wanted the image to convey was from a bit of
deep thinking. But HOW I wanted to convey that was relatively simple
and straight forward -- wrap yourself in duct tape and then just look
like you're scared as heck!
And yeah, if I'd thought the image out even just a bit more, I probably
would have shaved before making this shot because it ain't rocket science
to figure out that removing duct tape hurts.
But what can I tell you? To quote Foghorn Leghorn: "That boy is about
as sharp as a bowling ball."
The highlights of this shot were slightly blown to begin with (a technical
faux pax because my mind was actually more focused on the fact
that I'd unwittingly wrapped this duct tape too tight, and want to at least
get off a few optional compositions before I might othewise pass out).
Okay, granted, I really didn't fully think that one one. D'Oh. Note to
self for next time: don't wrap the duct tape so tight you bonehead.
Later on, however, I was noticing that the image seems to communicate
better with the highlights blown rather than making effort to correct that
intial problem. Go figure -- serendipity. And so my efforts actually had
me quite deliberately processing the shot somewhat off color and even
further emphasizing that blown out highlights quality. And although
technically a faux pax, nevertheless aesthetically this just seemed to me
better convey that sense of things not being in control -- security that is
force upon a person (like a hostage) who has no freedom over their
environement and doesn't even have the liberty to choose their setting
or to scream out.
So it is one of the rare times where I actually went against the grain of
what my photographic learning has taught me is technically correct, and
done so for the sake of deliberately adding to the overall message I most
wanted the image to convey.
We often think of security as something that provides comfort and safety.
But someone else's idea of security, when imposed upon us, has an altogether
different meaning because it just leaves us feeling fearful and without liberty,
and without a sense ofcontrol. And that's what I was hoping this image
might convey.

The highlights may be blown Dawn, but I strongly suspect that this was a 1 shot attempt - especially after he took the duct tape off. LOL. Very imaginative idea for the assignment CJ.
Wow. You probably should have shaved before putting that duct tape on. But maybe the look in your eyes indicates that you have just come to that realization yourself...
