Steve Sprengel

Omaha, Nebraska

One of many prize-winning orchids from the Greater Omaha Orchid Society annual show and sale at the mall.

I asked permission to photograph from both the Society president via e-mail, then
before bringing my camera into the mall, I asked mall security if it would be ok.
Photographing the orchids was fine, but it seemed that everything else was off limits.

The orchids were displayed so close to each other that it was difficult to get an uncluttered
background, so for this image, I reduced the lighting on the surrouding foliage by painting
on the layer mask of a Levels adjustment layer in Photoshop CS then copied the same layer mask
to a Saturation adjustment layer, using copy and paste of the alpha channel, to reduce the saturation.

Shot in RAW and converted with Pixmantec's RawShooter Essentials 2005.

Noise processed and sharpened with Noise Ninja.

They are very beautiful and you captured their beauty well!

The sharpening and color are more severe when I process things on my ancient, larger CRT. I've uploaded a more normal looking image done using my smaller, more contrasty LCD.

Adjustment layer masks are great...

I just inserted a new, less-processed RAW image layer below all the adjustment layers and the lighting effects where in place. I only had to tinker with the Sat adjustment layer a bit to give the foliage a little more green.

Nice composition Steve. It looks a bit oversharpened to me but I wasn't there so don't know if this is the case.
