The eyes have many facets but for stereo vision to judge distances it turns toward the subject. This was the first shot so I'm sure it was looking towards the lens a few inches away. It was only about 1 1/4 inches long, while the adults grow to three or four times that size and have wings. This guy couldn't fly so I was able to get quite a few shots, but the first was the only one with the compelling stare.
