Imagine that you are on vacation with
your family in the 1960s. Up ahead, not
more than 200 feet from the highway is
an ICBM with a 9 Megaton warhead.
Welcome to Kansas.
They were all Titan II silos, according to my research, and there were 18 of them. There were 18 of them surrounding Wichita during the same period, and also around Topeka. I could go on, but that's enough for now.
My sister and BIL lived in North Little Rock for a few years and there were numerous (pink) concrete silo doors to be seen scattered over the central Arkansas countryside. They were all (mostly?) Titan-II silos.
I remember the tests of the siren in my town growing up, in case there was a nuclear missile being fired as us and we could go to the towns civil defense building.
