Gray Hairstreak Strymon melinus Butterfly Macro
by Steve Sprengel

Lincoln, Nebraska

This is almost the entire frame using a EF-25 II extension tube on a Canon XSi
18-55 IS kit lens with the focus set to give enough distance to the subject.

There is a trade-off between a shallow depth-of-field and unsharpness caused by diffraction.
Because the subject was large enough, I choose diffraction blur of f/29 over a shallow DOF.

Here is the macro-flash bracket (another view) rigged from a simple
flip-flash bracket with its hot-shoe attachment turned upside-down.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi ,Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
1/200s f/29.0 at 41.0mm iso100 + EF25II extension tube full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

What a nice fresh Hairstreak you captured. Theyu are such beautiful butterflies. I am amazed you could get thatclose to it without scaring it off.

This was shot about 4 inches from the 1/2-inch subject so at f/29 the DOF is about 1/16th of an inch. This little guy was moving around so much as was the flower in the breeze so I needed as much help as possible. f/11 is optimal for this lens but having only the head in focus wasn't the sort of shot I was after.

seems to me there's a mushy middle between f/29 and what you talk about as too shallow a DOF? A shallower DOF will help to isolate your subject--the butterfly is small enough you could still get good detail thruout without using f/29 whilst muting the background better. F/29 seems like overkill to me?
