Where to Photograph Herons

Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, B.C.

You won't have to travel far to see Great Blue Herons. They're everwhere along Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. You'll see them just outside of the ferry terminal near Tswannsen, around the Victoria Harbour, at Swan Lake in Victoria, just about everywhere. But the very best photography opportunities for photographing herons is Beacon Hill Park right in downtown Victoria.

There are exactly five trees where up to 100 herons nest, mate and have babies from around February to May every year. These five trees are found right off Douglas Road, at the first lake past Superior Street. There is also a resident heron named Henry. Henry was found injured and the park people helped him out. He is still wild, but he does not leave the park, even after the heron migration in the winter. He does participate in the mating and nesting along with the other herons, but he's also very friendly to humans. You can always spot Henry between 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at any time of year along the lake on Douglas Road. He is always in the same spot and you can get very close to him.
