Orca

Vancouver Island, B.C.

Orcas (Orcinus orca) are also known as "Killer Whales", but they are not killers of humans -- and they are not even whales. Orcas actually belong to the dolphin family. These animals divide themselves into family groups, or pods, that are lead by an adult female.
Orcas captured for sea aquariums live an average of only five and a half years, whereas orcas in natural habitats are able to reach 80 years. Calves are taught their own group's specific dialect used as a form of communication for their entire lifetimes. This species feeds on sea lions, seals, marine birds, whales and fish, and does not have natural predators.

Great shot. You captured the moment, making it look like the whale is just bobbing there. We've all seen the whale crashing into the water pics, this is much more subtle. Good framing with the foggy background. A place I can't wait to visit.

OH MY! What a spectacular shot! I've seen these beauties at Sea World, but in the wild it would be an amazing experience.
Guest 14-May-2005 12:53
This is a really great piece of work. You are a great photographer and this set of photos are brilliant.

Technically I think you need 1 of 3:
1. A tripod
2. a lense with image stabilizer
3. faster shutter speed.

But this is a great photo and deserves a vote.

Excellent....

1. everything's a bit blurry and/or out of focus, maybe only photographers would take notice of it, whatever. i take it your hands were shaking coz it was freaking cold on the boat :p

2. regardless of the blurriness that drives me nuts, the composition of the shot combined with this beauty "sitting" in the water is amaaaazing, bravo!

Awesome! Such a beautiful creature.
Guest 23-Feb-2005 15:35
This is just amazing. When we were on Vancouver Island (Campbell River), we went salmon fishing. Caught one codfish, no salmon. Felt ripped off but did see some killer whales that saved the trip. Unfortunatley,no pictures like this. It is amazing.
